The December 31, 1958, Lee Lockwood, then a young photojournalist, travelled to Cuba to follow what looked like the end of the regime of Bautista. He arrived the day before Fidel Castro took power and spent a week asking questions around the island before being able to finally get in touch with the victorious leader. Since the beginning, Castro took Lockwood in sympathy and for the next ten years he was invited several times to Cuba, allowing him to attend his small circle of collaborators and explore the island freely without being subject to the usual restrictions imposed on American journalists. In 1965, Castro agreed to release a Lockwood a detailed exclusive interview, but then, appointment after appointment, did not show up. The days became weeks, and after three endless months Lockwood, as well as many other journalists before and after him, was still waiting to hear from Castro. But it was worth the effort: all that wait resulted in an interview seven days River where the two talked about everything from racial issues in the United States to the Cuban missile crisis, and even today remains one of the most insightful portraits of the Cuban leader. The interview of Lockwood and his comments are now republished along with hundreds of photographs between pictures taken by photojournalists during the weeks of traveling with Castro and images of Cuba in the 1960s.
