The film tells the behind-the-scenes of the painter's life and art, and highlights its extreme confidentiality and introspection. It is exciting to see Botero's commitment and total dedication to art as the only chance for redemption and it is interesting to discover his incredible ascent from provincial Colombia to the affirmation of the most recognized living artist in the world. His plump and burly figures are famous all over the world, alternately inexpressive and brash, impassive but playful and controversial in their oversized presence. The childhood spent in the poverty and hardship characteristic of the medellin countryside and the loss of his father at an early age turn Botero into a man in the throes of restlessness and the need to experiment. He then landed in Florence in the 1950s where he was transformed by the humanism of Piero della Francesca; and in 1960s New York, where he felt like an outcast in an era of pop art and abstract expressionism.
