With the Great War the way of fighting between the armies changes. From the smoky battlefields of the nineteenth century we move to the exhausting war of position in the trenches: something that technological evolution had allowed, but that no one had been able to predict. To hide from the enemy, to confuse him, to induce him to mistake becomes a necessity, recognized by the major states. After recalling the technical innovations and the artistic, technological and philosophical humus that characterizes the beginning of the twentieth century, this work illustrates how the states of the understanding address the problem of military camouflage: from the change in the uniforms up To solutions conceived and experimented in order to conceal and hide. Men, means, animals, weapons, roads: In the Great War much seems to be what it is not. Special attention they have the history of masking in Italy and a very special type of it: that of the effects on the disfigured faces of the veterans.
