Si perdeva per il sogno di Icaro, Tournachon, grandioso, mitologico, archetipico. Il vecchio Padre Tempo lo aspetterà sbuffando fino a novant'anni per dargli la soddisfazione di una sua trionfale retrospettiva all'Éxposition Universelle... Baudelaire, invece, estraneo addirittura a se stesso. Gli incubi ricorrenti degli ultimi anni, che traduce in progetti letterari ma non ha il cuore di portare a termine, radunano le macerie di mille Case Usher, e se evocano un mito è più simile a Cthulhu. Lo "scrittore della vita moderna" tollera la vita moderna solo se mediata dall'arte, perché la vita che non è arte, inerte conseguenza della natura, lasciata all'incuria, non può essere altro che bruttezza esteriore e interiore...
