Sulla natura. Testo greco a fronte: ''L'essere è e non può non essere, il non-essere non è ed è impossibile che sia.'' Queste parole di Parmenide tematizzano per la prima volta quel principio di non-contraddizione che solo, dirà Aristotele, permette agli uomini di pensare e parlare e di non vivere come piante. Insieme all'altro principio parmenideo, secondo cui il pensiero è sempre e solo pensiero dell'essere, principio che dal VI secolo a.C. rimarrà basilare nel pensiero occidentale e pressoché inattaccato almeno sino all'Idealismo tedesco dei primi dell'Ottocento, è questa la più cospicua eredità di un pensatore che si può ben dire abbia tracciato i ''binari'' su cui il pensiero occidentale si sarebbe per sempre mosso. Si capisce, perciò, quanto Parmenide sia sempre attuale e come valga davvero per tutti la pena di accostarsi al pensiero di colui che icasticamente Platone ha definito ''padre venerando e terribile'' della filosofia. Il poeta ci conduce nel cuore e nel nucleo originario della problematica dell'Essere, alla ''rivelazione della Verità'' e, insieme, dischiude un nuovo orizzonte alle nostre erronee opinioni di mortali. These words of Parmenides thematize for the first time that principle of non-contradiction which alone, Aristotle would say, allows men to think and speak and not to live like plants. Together with the other Parmenidean principle, according to which thought is always and only the thought of being, a principle that from the sixth century B.C. will remain basic in Western thought and almost unattacked at least until the German Idealism of the early nineteenth century, this is the most conspicuous legacy of a thinker who can well be said to have traced the ''tracks'' on which Western thought would forever move. It is understandable, therefore, how always Parmenides is relevant and how it is really worthwhile for everyone to approach the thought of the one whom Plato graphically defined as the ''venerable and terrible father'' of philosophy. The poet leads us to the heart and to the original nucleus of the problematic of Being, to the ''revelation of the Truth'' and, at the same time, opens a new horizon to our erroneous opinions as mortals.
