La morte del fiume: Il volume vincitore nel '74 del premio Strega viene ri-edito per commemorare lo scrittore nei cento anni dalla nascita. Guglielmo Petroni nacque a Lucca il 30 ottobre 1911. La sua prima raccolta di poesie "Versi e memoria", del 1935, fu salutata entusiasticamente da Giuseppe De Robertis e Walter Binni. Nel 1938 si trasferì a Roma, invitato da Curzio Malaparte, per dirigere "Prospettive". A Roma prese parte attiva alla Resistenza. Nella primavera del 1944 fu arrestato dalle SS e chiuso nel carcere di Via Tasso; dopo essere stato torturato e condannato a morte venne trasferito a Regina Coeli, dove fu salvato in extremis dall'arrivo degli alleati. Da quella esperienza nacque "Il mondo è una prigione" che, come scrisse il Sapegno, resta ancora "una delle prove più alte della letteratura di quel periodo". Nel dopoguerra uscivano intanto le sue migliori opere letterarie che meritarono molti premi, tra cui il "Premio Strega" nel 1974, assegnato a "La morte del fiume", e il "Premio Selezione Campiello" nel 1984 a "Il nome delle parole". È morto il 29 aprile 1993.
