Il sangue dei fratelli. Il romanzo di Roma: Fausto e Marco si somigliano come due gocce d'acqua e vivono nella stessa casa, ma non sono fratelli. Fausto è uno schiavo, nato da una schiava e, si sussurra, dal padrone, Marco invece è figlio di quest'ultimo e della moglie legittima, ed è l'erede dei nobili Drusi. La loro condizione, tuttavia, non rispecchia il colore della loro anima: tanto Fausto è coraggioso e fedele, quanto Marco è vile e dedito ai vizi. Il destino dei due giovani sembra già segnato, ma la guerra fra Mario e Silla irrompe scompaginando le carte. Il padrone viene ucciso durante gli scontri e, dopo una serie di avventure per terra e per mare, anche Marco muore. Fausto per sopravvivere prende il suo posto, ma fingere non è facile: il timore di essere scoperto non lo abbandona, inoltre dal passato di Marco compaiono all'improvviso gravi accuse da cui difendersi e Fausto, innocente, si trova ad affrontare un processo per stupro e omicidio.
