Res gestae divi Augusti: Le Res gestae sussistono, più o meno mutile, nel testo bilingue inciso sulle pareti interne (latino) ed esterne (greco) del pronao del tempio dedicato a Roma ed Augusto ad Ancyra , moderna Ankara; nei frammenti del testo greco, un tempo inciso sul grande basamento di un gruppo statuario raffigurante Augusto e la sua famiglia, ritrovati presso l'antica Apollonia, oggi Uluborlu; infine nei frammenti latini di una monumentale epigrafe, forse incisa su un propileo eretto ad Antiochia, presso l'attuale Yalvaç. Il confronto e l'integrazione reciproca di questi esemplari sopravvissuti ha consentito, tra la seconda metà dell'Ottocento e la prima del Novecento, di mettere a punto l'edizione moderna di quella che viene considerata "la regina delle iscrizioni". Circa la data di composizione delle Res gestae, è ormai opinione condivisa che Augusto abbia a più riprese, nel corso del suo lungo governo, riveduto la redazione del testo. Le Res gestae sono state definite "un capolavoro di ambiguità", un'opera in cui le imprese, compiute da un uomo di indubbia grandezza, finiscono per coprire il sangue versato (e giustificato, in nome della pax) e per celare sotto una coltre di omissis il declino delle antiche libertà, declino solo in parte compensato dal rispetto della tradizione. Nel 1938, in epoca fascista, si volle di nuovo incidere la "regina delle iscrizioni"nella pietra e ricollocare accanto al sepolcro di Augusto quel messaggio che il tempo aveva cancellato.
