"Elvis who?" In 1956, Al Wertheimer responded when RCA asked him to do a photo shoot on a Memphis musician. Wertheimer could not even remotely imagine that this would be the work of his life: Elvis, who was only 21 at the time, was destined to become a legend. Wertheimer took to following him as a shadow on every occasion: even while Elvis was in his adored seductive robes the photographer was allowed to portray him. That year, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs, creating an all-round portrait of the musician at the dawn of planetary success. The work collects the most significant photographs taken in 1956, along with a report on Elvis made in 1958 in Germany, when he was in the army. Alongside the best-known photographs, the volume features numerous completely unpublished shots.
