Tra i personaggi in cui lo scrittore si imbatterà durante la sua indagine retrospettiva sulle tracce della femme fatale, vi è una donna con cui nascono una relazione e, per il protagonista, una passione che si intrecceranno al dramma generale di una situazione esistenziale e professionale compromessa. A small Belgian publisher on the verge of bankruptcy decides to make a novel that can revive the fortunes of his company. The idea was born by chance, doing a search for a Christmas strenuous on an old brussels color factory. Pieter Schut, a writer close friend of the publisher, receives the assignment and discovers some newspaper clippings that speak of an event that happened thirty years earlier: the suicide for the sake of Paul, heir to the family that owns the factory. His fiancée, branded by the media as femme fatale, had then lost track. The publisher thinks it is a good subject on which to make the novel that will solve its economic problems. Among the characters in which the writer will come across during his retrospective investigation into the traces of the femme fatale, there is a woman with whom a relationship is born and, for the protagonist, a passion that will be linked to the general drama of an existential situation professionally compromised. The novel offers the inspiration to address the crisis of European literature and culture, but also to investigate on several levels the figure of the femme fatale, the myth fin de siècle and the historical figures that embodied it.
