Pompei 79 d. C.: "La nube si levava, non sapevamo con certezza da quale monte, poiché guardavamo da lontano; solo più tardi si ebbe la cognizione che il monte fu il Vesuvio. La sua forma era simile ad un pino più che a qualsiasi altro albero. Come da un tronco enorme la nube svettò nel cielo alto e si dilatava e quasi metteva rami. Credo, perché prima un vigoroso soffio d'aria, intatto, la spinse in su, poi, sminuito, l'abbandonò a se stessa o, anche perché il suo peso la vinse, la nube si estenuava in un ampio ombrello: a tratti riluceva d'immacolato biancore, a tratti appariva sporca, screziata di macchie secondo il prevalere della cenere o della terra che aveva sollevato con sé". Sono queste le parole usate da Plinio il Giovane, nella prima lettera a Tacito, dove descrive l'inizio dell'evento eruttivo del Vesuvio, nel 79 d. C, che dà il nome al ciclo pittorico di Nicholas Tolosa. Una serie di otto tele, dove protagonisti sono i corpi "pietrificati" dei pompeiani. Tolosa partendo dallo studio dei calchi restituisce attraverso la sua pittura una sensazione al limite tra il racconto inerme degli scheletri di uomini e donne e bambini, e la vita sorpresa dalla tragedia....
"The cloud was rising, we did not know for sure from which mountain, for we were looking from afar; only later was it known that the mountain was Vesuvius. Its shape was more similar to a pine tree than to any other tree. As if from an enormous trunk, the cloud soared into the high sky and dilated and almost put branches. I believe, because first a vigorous breath of air, intact, pushed it upwards, then, diminished, abandoned it to itself or, also because its weight overcame it, the cloud was exhausted in a large umbrella: at times it shone with immaculate whiteness, at times it appeared dirty, mottled with stains according to the prevalence of the ashes or the earth it had raised with it". These are the words used by Pliny the Younger, in the first letter to Tacitus, where he describes the beginning of the eruptive event of Vesuvius, in 79 AD, which gives its name to the pictorial cycle of Nicholas Tolosa. A series of eight canvases, where the protagonists are the "petrified" bodies of the Pompeians. Toulouse, starting from the study of casts, restores through his painting a sensation on the border between the helpless story of the skeletons of men and women and children, and the life surprised by tragedy....
